Gene expression is the process by which information from a gene is synthesized into a product, RNA and consequently in proteins. The genes that are expressed, known as the genotype, can have a major influence on the physical characteristics of cells, which are called the phenotype. The expression of certain genes is changeable and can be altered by different factors, whether it’s just at a certain point in a lifetime or regular fluctuations over the course of a day. We have taken a look at some of the most incredible physical and behavioural changes that can occur as a result of changes in an organism’s gene expression, that show just how powerful these changes can be!

From the snake that can change the size of its heart based on whether it’s recently ingested a meal to the starfish that can regrow whole limbs, check out some of the amazing transformations that gene expression can bring about in our infographic below!
