Application Scientist – Reference No. 96

The role

As an Application Scientist you will be a part of the Technical Support Customer Care team, located in the Vienna office. Providing customers with technical assistance for all of Lexogen’s products, throughout their entire journey, from pre-sales questions, through sample and library preparation, to sequencing run setups, data analysis methods, and data interpretation. You will be working closely with order processing, bioinformatics, sales managers, distributors, services, marketing, and product management. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, resourceful, and proactive, with excellent communication skills.


  • Communicate directly with customers via email, phone, video calls, and on-site visits
  • Provide technical information and consultations for customers, sales team, and global distributors
  • Troubleshooting for customer RNA-seq experiments (root cause investigation)
  • Manage and resolve customer complaints
  • Plan and deliver on-site customer training or troubleshooting support visits
  • Maintain and update technical knowledge databases and customer technical resources (DocuWiki, Confluence)
  • Manage and maintain customer requests and information records (JIRA Service Management, Salesforce)

Job requirements

  • Laboratory experience in molecular biology techniques, RNAse-free and aseptic handling practices is essential
  • In-depth understanding of molecular biology techniques
  • Ability to troubleshoot molecular biology assays, (qRT-)PCR, and NGS library preparation workflows
  • Interpretation of data and quality metrics from RNA-seq experiments
  • Understanding of sequencing technologies and quality metrics from various instrument platforms (Illumina, PacificBiosciences, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Ion Torrent)
  • Deep technical understanding of Lexogen products and protocols
  • Technical instruction of Lexogen team members, and customers
  • Self-confidence, emotional intelligence, and stress resistance
  • Continuous information management and record keeping
  • Keeping up to date on technical literature related to RNA-Seq
  • Understanding competitor product technical workflows and specifications
  • Use of essential software tools for customer relationship, information, and request management (JIRA software, JIRA Service Management, Confluence, Salesforce)
  • Fluent in English


Your experience and know-how

  • PhD in RNA biology, Molecular biology, Biochemistry, or bioinformatics (with wet-lab experience), or a Masters in any of the above areas +3 years relevant research experience [Mandatory]
  • RNA biology Expertise (Practical and theoretical) [Mandatory]
  • Solid understanding of RNA-sequencing principles, methods, and data interpretation [Mandatory]
  • Basic understanding of or experience with bioinformatic analysis of RNA-seq data [Mandatory]
  • Practical experience with NGS library preparation and sequencing data interpretation [Desired]
  • NGS method development or troubleshooting experience [Advantageous]
  • Customer support experience, including field application support [Advantageous]
  • Knowledge of or experience with automated liquid handlers [Advantageous]

The compensation

  • Remuneration will be according to experience and performance.
    (Disclaimer according to Austrian Law: Minimum base salary according to collective agreement for utilization group III is EUR 1’957,64 per month (14x/year) for a full-time position.)
